I have officially become a full-fledged tourist. I traveled around London on one of those double-decker open-top buses, leaning off the sides to snap pictures at buildings and landmarks, without actually getting off the bus to get better acquainted, while ticking sites off my list of things to see. Yep, I was that tourist. Ok, so I wasn’t actually that bad. I actually did walk plenty of London’s streets and sites on my own two feet. But this is my first time to London, and…
Sun, fun, and mud at Glen Ivy Hot Springs
I hope you will forgive me for jumping around a bit on the blog. I thought I’d interrupt my adventures abroad to talk a little about adventures at home. And hey, that keeps things interesting, no? After 3 months spent in the beginnings of a chilly South American winter, I was ready for some of our famous Southern California sun. I was also ready to catch up with one of my best girlfriends. Our requirement was someplace relaxing and pampering (as…
Packing List, Part Deux: Summer in Europe
A few weeks ago, while Amazon-shopping for some more travel clothing, and putting together my summer wardrobe for Europe, I said something I never thought I’d say: “I think I have too much clothes.” Yep, the girl who previously had a closet full of clothes with tags, and who would go for over a month without repeating a shirt, is now over-analyzing every piece of clothing in her carry-on. After 3 months in South America, I realized how minimalist I can be….
Another Not-so-charming Colonia Story
In my last post about Colonia, I may have given the impression that there was absolutely nothing else to do. That’s not quite true (I’ll get to that). And I may also have given the impression that the entire trip was happy and joyous. That’s also not quite true. In fact, on that 2nd day, hours before our return to Montevideo, I literally wanted to wring D’s neck. It all started when D only brought 2000 pesos to Colonia, and forgot…
Yearning for the Quaint Life at Colonia del Sacramento
I don’t need much to absolutely fall in love with a place. I don’t need fancy restaurants, shopping malls, museums, or skyscrapers. Instead, give me cobblestone streets, sidewalk cafés, cups of hot chocolate, ocean waves, and a view of a sunset. That’s not asking for too much, right? By this criteria, Colonia del Sacramento has everything I need to fall in love. And I did just that at first sight. Colonia del Sacramento is a little town about a 3 hour bus ride…
South America Instagram Round-up
Our South America trip is done. Over. I already miss it a lot, from the guy who belts out Nirvana songs outside my window to spending afternoons in cozy cafes (no, Starbucks just doesn’t cut it). I’m no where near done sharing about South America, but for now I thought I’ll do something a little more fun, while re-living some of my best memories! If you don’t already know, I’m a big fan of Instagram (see my pictures here)! Here is a random selection…
What’s next for this summer? (and help needed!)
As our South American adventure is coming to a close, it’s time to reveal what’s next for us! And more importantly, to ask all of you guys for help! We are going to Europe from July 6 to September 24!! For an 80 day tour of Europe. We jumped on plane tickets months back when Norwegian Air offered a promotional price flying from the US to London, on their new 787’s. We basically booked the earliest flight in and the latest flight out possible during…
An Introduction to Ciudad Vieja, Montevideo
There are some cities that just feel like home right away. Montevideo is that city for me. I never thought I’d love Montevideo so much. I mean, I’ve never even heard of this little capital city until a few months ago. We only picked this place because we were visiting Buenos Aires and needed somewhere else to go for a month. Enter Montevideo – an easy boat ride across the river from BA. We’re honestly the laziest travelers I know, so easy wins…
Sleeping Puppies Collection, Santiago
After spending some time in a city, I always come to associate it with certain things that particularly stick out in my mind. Like Montevideo is all about the doors. Buenos Aires was all about the pastries and cakes. And Santiago? Well it was all about the mote con huesillos, jugo naturales, coffee shops, pisco sours… (hmmm.. I’m starting to see a drink theme going on). But it was also all about the stray dogs. You’ll see them everywhere, in both the poorer areas and the affluent areas….
Is Buenos Aires Over-rated?
Buenos Aires was a city I already loved even before visiting. Whenever I thought about it, I conjured up romantic images of quaint French style buildings, cobblestone streets, cute sidewalk cafes, and heavenly delicate pastries. I mean, come on, it’s Paris of the South… what could go wrong? What WOULDN’T I dislike? Yep, I was not wrong and Buenos Aires had all those things and more. The Palermo neighborhood we stayed in had quaint French style buildings aplenty. We walked…
