After spending some time in a city, I always come to associate it with certain things that particularly stick out in my mind. Like Montevideo is all about the doors. Buenos Aires was all about the pastries and cakes. And Santiago? Well it was all about the mote con huesillos, jugo naturales, coffee shops, pisco sours… (hmmm.. I’m starting to see a drink theme going on). But it was also all about the stray dogs.
You’ll see them everywhere, in both the poorer areas and the affluent areas. It can be a bit jarring at first, but you’ll quickly warm up to it. And now that’s something I even miss about Santiago (neither Buenos Aires nor Montevideo really have any strays). I guess I really really miss not having pets anymore, so it helped to still be able to get a daily dose of puppy loving.
I also delighted in snapping pictures of them. Sometimes, D wouldn’t let me, because he said we were in a bad part of town and I shouldn’t stop to crouch on the ground to take pictures. And sometimes, he was walking fast to get to the coffee house and I knew he’d be mad if I stopped and held us up. You don’t want to make him mad before he’s had his espresso.
“Can we stop for 5 seconds? There’s a pod of puppies over there.” I’d ask.
“No. No pictures.”
“But there are FOUR of them all together! Really cute ones! We’re missing SO MANY puppies!”
“NO! What are you going to do with all those pictures anyway?!”
Well friends. Since I have gathered quite a collection, and have nothing to do with them, I’m going to share them with you.
Why?
BECAUSE PUPPIES.
One thing about all the strays: they’re all really sleepy. It must be such a hard life to be a puppy and have the world at your fingertips (or the city of Santiago, at least)!
Just the slightest hint of a tongue. Adorable!
I’m so tired, I could sleep anywhere! Like on a planter…
…. or in a box!
This is the resident stray who hangs out at Plaza del Armas. Most of the time, you can find him sitting by the street artists. And a lot of the time, a crowd of people will be around him, giggling at his chubbiness. We affectionately named him El Gordo.
But he’s actually not the fattest stray in the area! This one really takes the cake!
Seriously though, Santiago had some of the nicest looking, and apparently very well fed, strays. I want to adopt them all if I could!
And yes, this shall be filed under the new category of “completely pointless”. Because sometimes, I just have to share content that’s of absolutely no use to anyone but me. :)
I hope this brightened up your day!

Hahah that is awesome. We saw a lot of strays in Sri Lanka, but they weren’t as clean as these ones look!
I bet not as well fed too, heh ;)
This post is incredible! Ha ha! They’re so cute.
I know!! Thanks! :)
Haha. So cute!
I’m glad you enjoyed it, Upasna!
OMG that fat dog made me laugh out loud! But really, those dogs are all so cute and they actually look like they are well taken care of, so hopefully they get plenty of food and some TLC!
Haha, I know! I still laugh every time I see the fat one. Don’t worry, they all look pretty well fed!
They are like Turkish Dogs – big and always asleep in public places. Nice Collection :)
Thanks! Haha yeah I loved how they were just sleeping in the middle of a busy walkway.
What a great collection of puppies! I had never heard of the stray dogs in Santiago so that’s good to know. It’s sad to see but they look pretty harmless just laying there. I’m glad you were able to take all these pictures. Glad to see they’re not malnourished. The fat one probably knows where to go for the best scraps :)
I was surprised there were so many, and sad that they didn’t have homes, but I felt better as soon as I saw they weren’t suffering!
Pointless? I think that these little things we notice while traveling adds some spice to the cities we visit. I love your puppy shots….they all seem so comfy!
Thanks Corinne! I agree, they definitely add character to a city :). I’ve never seen such comfy dogs in the middle of busy streets!
Hi Anna! I love taking animal shots when I travel. I have quite a collection of cat shots from Chiang Mai.
Your doggy shots are fabulous!
Thanks Nancie! Glad to know I’m not the only one, haha!
Oh my goodness! The chubbiness is too cute! Definitely well fed. I wish I had taken more photos of all the cute kitties while in Greece.
Cats are a little harder for me to take pics of because they tend to scamper away! These puppies were easy to photograph since they were all so lazy and sleepy :)
