When my sister came to visit me in Malaysia back in June, I wanted to plan something special that will make her visit memorable. Like I’ve said before, photos are the best souvenirs, so I asked a local photographer in Kuala Lumpur (meet James in this post!) to take some shots of us.
I had also planned on leaving Malaysia shortly after my sister’s visit. KL has been a very special place to me for the past year. I had found a home here during a confusing period in life. Due to some circumstances, it no longer felt like the right place for me, but I will always have a deep love for the city and wanted a special way to remember it.
So a photoshoot with my sister was the perfect way to remember both of our times in Malaysia!

We started the shoot at the Common Man cafe in Petaling Jaya after a delicious brunch of eggs benedict and brioche french toast. We had gone shopping the day before and chose complimentary outfits (not exactly matchy-matchy, but in the same colors).
Can you tell that we’re twins? :)

We’re actually holding empty cups and faking laughing. Sorry to the barista and other patrons who might have been confused with the sudden bursts of fake cackling. :P

The next day, we headed into the city to continue part 2 of the shoot at the Perdana Botanical Gardens (or Lake Gardens). The gardens is a HUGE park smack in the center of the city. It’s a beautiful place to get away from the messy, chaotic concrete jungle that is KL.
We chose the sunken garden and its vine covered corridors as our backdrop. For this shoot, we donned heels and flowy green dresses to match the natural setting (okay, so maybe this was the only dress I have in my travel wardrobe – one that I had recently acquired from a street market in Ubud).

We’ve gotten good at the fake laugh by now.

I hope you enjoyed these pictures! It was really fun doing it and I’m glad we have photos we can look back on. Wherever I am, I hardly ever have any pictures of me (as I’m usually the one behind the camera), so it’s nice to have some good pictures in a city that means so much to me. :)
Do you ever take photoshoots on your travels?
Looking for a photographer in Kuala Lumpur? You can get in touch with James on his Facebook or Instagram. He does weddings, events, food, portraits, and aerial.
This is a lovely idea! I wanted to do one with my husband before we left the UK, but he was a massive party pooper about it. Maybe one day. Your photos came out so beautifully, and what a lovely way to remember the city whilst getting some great shots of you and your sister. That park looks so pretty!
Thanks Rachel! Haha, isn’t that always the case with men. But I’m sure you’ll be back there!
These are the cutest ever! I wish I had a sister. <3
Thanks Amanda! It was really fun! And we can totally set up our own photoshoot!
These are so beautiful and genuine (I never would have guessed that you were fake laughing!!) I love your colour co-ordinated outfits too!
Thanks Marcella! The outfits worked out well. :)
You guys look soooo much alike. I mean, I know you’re twins, but still! Love the fake laughs and empty coffee cups too lol. Having a photo shoot on a trip is SUCH a good idea, I’m not really sure why I’ve never done it before! Maybe next year….
Haha that’s funny that you think we look alike. I think Asians would say we don’t look that much alike, but others will think we do! Try a photoshoot next time in a place you really love! :)
Wow this is gorgeous – I really love this idea! Especially as, like you, I’m often the one behind the camera.
Oh I know. It sucks when I leave a place and hardly have pictures of myself in it! And thanks Jessi!
Its lovely photo shoot you are looking nice.
