After spending the first few days of February in Vietnam, we flew to Singapore, where we spent the rest of the month. I was so happy to unpack and have a place to call home for a little while. I knew Singapore would be lovely. Everyone talks about that. But it’s not the beauty or cleanliness that intrigued me the most. Rather, it was the mix of cultures. I loved walking down the street and seeing all shades of skin color and hearing all…
A day in the life: Hanoi, Vietnam
or: how I developed a caffeine addiction In travel, you mostly only hear about amazing sights or thrilling activities. But I assure you – our everyday is not that glamorous! A Day in the Life is where I capture the small moments that make up a typical day and give you a peek at what life really looks like in pictorial snippets, as well as some of my recommendations and idea for cost. I feel like every time I do one…
In photos: crazy, colorful Hanoi Old Quarter
Vietnam was the Southeast Asian country I was most excited to visit. We started our Vietnamese adventure with two weeks in the capital city of Hanoi. I have to admit that we came mainly for the food, but unexpectedly, the city completely enthralled me before I even took my first bite. This city… how do I begin to paint the picture? It’s absolutely crazy. Even though I was no longer a Southeast Asia newbie by the time I made it there, the madness of the city still took me by surprise. There seems…
[Bangkok] Giant prawns and bird’s nests in Chinatown, Bangkok
Bangkok was not an immediately lovable city to me. In fact, after a few (very short) visits there, I only found one thing to truly love: the malls (seriously, the BEST… I may need to introduce you guys to the awesomeness of Bangkok malls in a future post). But as a whole, it’s just too dirty, noisy, and stressful. And not to mention HOT all the damn time. So on our most recent visit, I didn’t care much to run around town hitting up major tourist…
January 2015 travel re-cap: month of the best food ever!!
If I had to choose one word to describe January, it would be gluttony. This was the month of the best eating ever! Dec 29 – Jan 9: Bangkok, Thailand We rang in the new year in Bangkok. It was actually our fourth time in the city, but our first time to properly explore it. For some reason (and I’m gonna sound like a really bad traveler now), we just weren’t that interested to see the main tourist attractions, like the wats or floating market. We didn’t even go to…
Angkor Temple Hopping Guide for Dummies
In my last post, I gave you a taste of everyday life in Siem Reap. But let’s be honest, if you’re headed to Siem Reap, it’s most likely because of one reason only: to see the ancient Angkor temples! So today, let’s get on to what you really care about and talk about temple hopping. First, before I say anything, I have somewhat of an embarrassing confession: I honestly didn’t know anything about the temples. I mean, of course I’ve…
A day in the life: Siem Reap, Cambodia
In travel, you mostly only hear about amazing sights or thrilling activities. But I assure you – our everyday is not that glamorous! A Day in the Life is where I capture the small moments that make up a typical day and give you a peek at what life really looks like in pictorial snippets, as well as some of my recommendations and idea for cost. In Siem Reap, we wake up late in the mornings after several good decent hours of…
December 2014 travel re-cap: from beaches on Koh Chang to temples in Siem Reap
Happy New Year everyone! I can’t believe the year is over! I haven’t decided yet if I will do a 2014 re-cap this year, as I see so many people are doing, but in the meantime, I will continue with my new monthly recaps: Nov 28 – Dec 10: Koh Chang, Thailand Over the past several months of travel, I’ve fallen in love with many places. When that happens, it’s sad to have to leave, but for the most part, I’ve been…
A very Cambodian… errr, French… Christmas
Confession: I’ve been a grinch all December this year. It’s just so hard to get into the holiday spirit when… ummm… there isn’t any at all. The first half of December was spent in hot and very un-festive Thailand. Then we got to Siem Reap, and I was happy to see lights and trees outside of hotels/restaurants. Looks like the Christmas spirit is alive and well here! But as the days went on, it still didn’t really feel like Christmas….
A shitty argument
I had speculated that Southeast Asia may cause a fair bit of culture shock. There’s the heat, the food, the markets, the more conservative way of dress, the language barrier, and of course my fears of giant cockroaches and squat toilets. Turns out, I didn’t have much to fear. Most people speak a little English to communicate, I’ve only come across a handful of cockroaches, and I have not had to use one single squat toilet. I was even surprised…
