Penang is a small island city known for some of Malaysia’s best street food, cute colonial heritage houses, and street art.
The last item – hunting street art – is perhaps the most fun thing to do in the city. It’s a great way to explore the Georgetown area. Most hostels in town will pass out a map with locations of the famous murals. It feels like a scavenger hunt as you search for each one and then snap a photo when you find it. Some are located in little alleyways so you have to search harder for it. It’s always worth the effort! And as you’re searching for a particular one, you may find other surprises on the way.
I admit, though, that I didn’t try particularly hard to find every single famous one. When my sister and I were in Penang, it was DREADFULLY hot. And of course, it’s best to search for street art when it’s still bright outside. We waited until about 1.5 hour before sunset to start hunting, but the heat was still terrible. So we only hit up the ones around Armenia Street.
There are better posts about Penang’s street art (such as Angie’s post. She wrote more about the history of it, and she found WAY more art than I did!), so mine is mostly just photos. They’re in no particular order. Enjoy!
Let’s start with a couple of my favorite ones!
This one is perhaps the MOST iconic Penang street art piece. It has practically become a symbol of Penang. A lot of souvenir items feature this brother and sister on a bike.

I love how a lot of the art have 3D elements that allow you to interact with the piece and become part of it. I love this one below too.
And here’s my interpretation of it:
Foodie tip: Conveniently, it’s located right next to one of my favorite cafes of all time – China House. Seriously, look at this post and you’ll understand why. It’s a definite can’t-miss if you’re ever in Penang!

Besides the wall murals, you’ll also see wire art. In the photo below, this wall has half that’s a mural, and half wire art.

The wire art is so unique. They tell the history of Penang. In this one below found on Love Lane, it tells of when many shophouses started being converted into cheap budget hotels, which made the area into a famous backpacker’s district.

As you stroll around, you’ll also see many kitty murals! These are meant to bring awareness and care to stray cats.
On the other corner of this mural is a mouse hiding from this cat!

I really love this little piece too. It shows the mix of 3 cultures that make up Malaysia: Malay, Chinese, and Indian.
Finally, I’ll end with a few more of my favorites. I love how the art is all interactive. It makes it more fun for photos.

This is another famous one that was hidden in a little alleyway. This is Brother and Sister on a Swing.
It’s so fun to explore the city by going on a little art treasure hunt. If you don’t mind doing a bit of walking in the heat, you can find a lot more than we did. I was so pleasantly surprised by the vibrant art scene in Penang. This is what makes Penang such a special place. It’s got food, nature, history, and art – a perfect mix.
Have you been to Penang? Where else in the world have you seen great street art?
P.S. I know I tend to be overly wordy, so there will be some more photo posts coming up!
For being so hot outside, you both still look so cute! I love your outfits. I always struggle with what to wear traveling when it’s so hot that is functional and cute. I think my two faves are the three girls/cultures and the swinging one. I love the idea of a street art scavenger hunt.

Those are some of my favorites as well! Oh gosh, I used to have the ugliest travel wardrobe, but now I go for cuter clothes. I don’t want to look like a backpacker!
Ahh, I LOVE this so much, these are seriously cool and just so much fun!! Thanks so much for sharing these beautiful pieces with us, I love to travel to places via blogs! Not only are the murals just so amazing, I just love the extra touch of them being interactive. Needless to say, I would travel to Asia just to see these (street art addict, ha!)
I know, I love that they’re interactive! It makes it just that much more awesome. It’s so fun to do a DIY photoshoot. Yes, when you make it back to Asia, you must come to Malaysia, and especially Penang! I think you’ll love it!
fun photos! love the cats murals #wanderfulwednesday
Yeah they’re so cute! :)
I love searching and finding incredible street art in the cities that I’m visiting, although Penang looks so unique with a few of them having the props with them. The one with the swing is beyond cool!
I think the street art in Penang is really unique too. And the interactive elements just make it that much more fun for photos!
I am very wordy too so don’t worry! I enjoy your wordy posts!
The street art is so cool, I have a relatively newfound love of it so I’d really enjoy exploring the streets of Penang. It looks like the place is stuffed with it! I really like the wire art, I’ve not seen anything like that before.
Yay, I’m glad to know that. I like your wordy posts too!
Next time you make it back to Malaysia, stop by Penang! It’s such a fun little island city and has everything!
I love all these interactive 3D street art! It’s so much fun! I do love the dragon mural, love the detailing in it. I enjoy your “wordy” posts… I feel like sometimes I am the complete opposite #writersblock ha
Thanks Christine… good to know that! Don’t worry, I get writer’s block all the time, so then I won’t post for a long time :/. The interactive art is so fun! I’ve never seen anything like it anywhere else.
Ooh, this street art looks great. I’ve been seeing quite a few posts about Penang lately and Malaysia is definitely creeping up my travel wishlist!
I hope you get to visit someday! I truly love Malaysia, which is why I always had such a hard time leaving!
These pictures are so cool! I didn’t know Penang had so much street art to offer but I love all the pieces!!
Penang is definitely known for it’s food and street art! I didn’t even find half of it.. I wish it wasn’t so hot, then I’d be more motivated to walk around and find all of them!
These are nice! I wonder why the brother-sister ones are the most popular.
I’m not sure, but I really like it too! It makes for such a nice photo. :)
Such a detailed and amazing travel guide! Your post definitely needs rereading!
Wow these are cool! I knew of the wall art, but I had no idea about the wire art, what an awesome concept!
The wire art is so cool! I wish I had taken more photos of the ones around town. Apparently, there’s a Jimmy Choo one, because fun fact: he was from Penang and was born to a family of shoemakers!
Ha wow, that IS a fun fact!
This is so cool! I love the idea of having 3D items!
Yeah! it’s such a cool concept, and makes it so fun to pose with!
