I don’t have a big family in the States. It really only consists of my small immediate family of four. And even then, the only family member D has met was my mom, over a couple of quick meals. So it’s accurate to say that he had no idea what he was in for when I brought him to China. And then all of a sudden, in the span of two months, he met and spent a significant amount of…
[Beijing] Da Dong Roast Duck: probably the fanciest meal I will ever eat
Thanks to everyone who supported more food posts on this blog! To start off, I am introducing you to Da Dong restaurant in Beijing. This is probably the fanciest food post I will ever have on this blog. Be forewarned: the following picture-heavy post may make you very very hungry. Beijing’s roast duck is perhaps the most internationally acclaimed Chinese dish ever created. And so when we went to Beijing, aside from cravings for my favorite childhood dishes from my…
Blogging questions on my mind
When we travel, it is not so much the sites and landmarks that get us excited, but rather the food. People are always saying to us, “You were in this city for so long… how come you didn’t go do this, this, or that?” And we would answer, “This is just how we like to travel. We like to eat.” As long as we hit up all the local food specialties and had a few good meals, we never feel like we missed…
April & May 2015 travel re-cap: the months of homecomings
I didn’t get a chance to write my usual monthly recap post at the end of April so this one is a 2-fer. I had my Lasik surgery at the very end of April and I may have slightly underestimated the recovery period. I thought I’d be back on the laptop in 2 days. But my (new, improved) eyes had other plans and decided that they didn’t want to look at a screen until a week later. And by then,…
I can’t believe I’m not in Holland! – Tulips in Beijing
Ever since early April, it seems that my blog and Instagram feeds have been popping up with pictures of everything spring. As we’ve been hanging around tropical countries for the past several months, we haven’t really noticed a change in season. But for the rest of the world (okay, just the northern hemisphere), it appears that spring has truly arrived, bringing with it blue skies, pastels, and of course, newly blooming flowers. I may be a tad late to the spring party…
Where I come from
In a red building, on the 4th floor, behind a wooden door plastered with red “good luck” banners, is a small apartment unit. It’s old, not often tidy, a little cramped, but is always filled with warmth and love. This is where I come from. I was born in Beijing, China, and had a, shall we say, quite an unusual childhood. Shortly after my birth, my father left to attend graduate school in the US, leaving my mom with two-months…
[Taipei] A street food lover’s guide to Taipei cuisine
A couple of weeks ago, D saw this article on Matador Network – 9 Foods You Have to Try in Taipei, Taiwan – and he was infuriated. Really?? Wontons?? Where are the stinky tofu and the pork belly rice? Both quintessential Taiwanese eats. Or even beef noodle soup? Only the dish that Taiwan is known for! Did the author only spend 2 days in Taipei and deemed the few meager snacks she had as must-eats? And seriously half of that list is…
One month in Beijing: a summary
Wow, I don’t even know how to start talking about my month in Beijing. The short version is: we were in Beijing for a month and all we saw was the Great Wall. The longer version is that we were so busy seeing people and eating food that in the end, we only had one free day left for sightseeing, so we picked to go to the Great Wall. Visiting Beijing is not just traveling to another city. It’s a homecoming. This is the city…
New blog design + a giveaway for you!!
Happy Monday! You may have noticed that things look a bit different here on Slightly Astray. This blog got a little facelift last week all thanks to Kelly from The Lady Errant. I’ve been feeling bored with my design for a while now and there were many aspects of it that I didn’t like (such as no search function). But I’m also pretty hopeless with WordPress and coding so I just kind of pretended the ugly parts didn’t exist. Occasionally,…
Is Boracay paradise?
Boracay, a tiny little island in the Visayas of the Philippines, is world famous for its long stretch of white sand, gently swaying palm trees, clear azure waters, little white sailboats, and vibrant sunsets. At least that’s what every single picture ever taken of Boracay looks like. Boracay looks like a picture-perfect tropical paradise. We didn’t have plans to go to the Philippines, but after hearing a few people rave about it, we looked into it. All blog posts I read also…
